How to cancel ProtonVPN
Last verified 2026-06-16 · official source
Steps to cancel ProtonVPN
- WEB (billed directly by Proton): Sign in at https://account.protonvpn.com (or account.proton.me).
- In the left sidebar, select 'Subscription'. (In some interfaces: gear icon Settings > All settings > Subscription.)
- Scroll down to the cancellation section and click 'Continue'.
- Click 'Cancel subscription'.
- Read the terms, then click 'Cancel subscription' again to confirm.
- Do NOT close the page: select a reason for canceling and click 'Submit'. The cancellation is not finalized until this reason step is completed.
- Your paid plan stays active until the end of the current billing period, then downgrades to Proton Free (no further charges).
- IF BILLED VIA APPLE APP STORE (iOS): you must cancel through Apple, not Proton. Open device Settings > tap your name/Apple ID > Subscriptions > Proton VPN > Cancel Subscription, then confirm.
- IF BILLED VIA GOOGLE PLAY (Android): open the Play Store app > tap your profile avatar > Subscriptions > Proton VPN, then follow the cancel prompts.
Things to watch out for
- The cancellation is NOT finalized until you select a reason and click Submit on the final screen; if you close the page early it may not go through.
- Canceling does not refund the remaining time. Your paid plan stays active until the current billing period ends, then drops to Proton Free.
- Refunds: Proton offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on subscriptions purchased directly from Proton. Request via Proton's support form; card refunds take about 5-10 business days, PayPal/Bitcoin about 1-2 working days. Cash and bank-transfer payments are not refundable, and refunds are limited to once per user.
- App-store-billed subscriptions CANNOT be canceled from the Proton website. You must cancel through Apple (iOS) or Google Play (Android), and refunds for those must be requested from Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google Play, not Proton.
- Lifetime/special deals may not be cancelable in the normal flow (lifetime plans are non-cancelable after the 30-day window); contact Proton support.
- After downgrading to Free, if your account exceeds Free-plan limits some features may stop working (for example, with Proton Mail you cannot send or receive messages until you free up space or re-upgrade).
Refunds
Proton offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on subscriptions purchased directly from Proton (website/apps). Request the refund within 30 days of purchase through Proton's support form (proton.me/support/contact); refunds go back to the original payment method (cards about 5-10 business days, PayPal/Bitcoin about 1-2 working days). Cash and bank-transfer payments are not refundable, and refunds can only be requested once per user. For subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store, request refunds from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com; for Google Play, request through Google Play.
No retention/save offer is documented in Proton's official cancellation flow; canceling simply disables future renewals and schedules the downgrade to Proton Free at period end. No phone number is offered (Proton has no cancellation phone line); support is via the in-account support form at proton.me/support/contact. A 'Reactivate now' option lets you restore the plan if you change your mind before it expires.
