How to cancel McAfee
Last verified 2026-06-16 · official source
Steps to cancel McAfee
- Go to https://myaccount.mcafee.com and sign in with the email and password tied to your subscription (you can also reach this from https://www.mcafee.com by signing in). Important: cancelling means turning OFF auto-renewal in your account. Uninstalling the McAfee app does NOT cancel the subscription or stop billing.
- Once signed in, click 'Subscriptions' (in some account versions this section is labeled 'Auto-Renewal' or is found under 'My Account').
- Find the subscription you want to stop and click 'Cancel' next to it. (Alternatively, at service.mcafee.com you can select 'Account' in the top right, then 'Auto-Renewal Settings'.)
- Scroll down and click 'Cancel Auto-Renewal' to begin cancellation.
- A retention / 'Before you go...' screen may appear offering a discount or reasons to stay. To proceed, confirm again by clicking the cancel / 'Cancel Auto-Renewal' button and click through any remaining confirmation screens until you see a cancellation confirmation message.
- Confirm you receive an email confirming auto-renewal is turned off. Keep it as proof.
- If you also want money back for a charge already taken, there is no self-service refund form: contact McAfee Customer Service by phone (1-866-622-3911) or live chat via https://service.mcafee.com and request a refund. Refunds are available within 30 days of an initial annual purchase or within 60 days of an annual auto-renewal charge (monthly plans are not eligible). Have your account email, the charge amount, and the charge date ready.
- IMPORTANT: if you bought McAfee through the Apple App Store or Google Play (or it came bundled through a retailer/PC maker or ISP), you may not be able to cancel it in your McAfee account. In that case cancel through that provider's subscription settings instead (see the app-store note).

Things to watch out for
- Uninstalling the McAfee software does NOT cancel the subscription; you will still be billed. You must turn off auto-renewal in your account.
- BILLING TIMING: McAfee's auto-renewal charges the card on file about 30 days BEFORE the subscription's expiration date, not on the expiration date itself. To avoid a charge, turn off auto-renewal well before the renewal date.
- Disabling auto-renewal stops FUTURE charges but does not refund or shorten your current paid term; your protection runs until the current period ends.
- The account UI varies by version; the cancel control may appear under 'Subscriptions' or 'Auto-Renewal', and the final button is typically 'Cancel Auto-Renewal'.
- Monthly McAfee plans are NOT covered by the money-back guarantee, so a monthly charge generally cannot be refunded; only annual plans qualify (30-day initial / 60-day renewal windows).
- SCAM WARNING: many fake 'McAfee cancellation' phone numbers and pop-ups circulate online (forum/Goodreads spam). Use only 1-866-622-3911 or the official service.mcafee.com chat. McAfee will not ask for remote access or payment to 'process' a refund.
- Refunds are NOT automatic; if you were already charged, you must contact support and request one within the eligible window.
Refunds
McAfee's money-back guarantee gives a full refund on request within 30 days of an initial annual purchase, or within 60 days of an annual auto-renewal charge. Monthly subscriptions are not eligible for a refund. There is no self-service refund form; you must request it through McAfee Customer Service by phone (1-866-622-3911) or live chat at https://service.mcafee.com. Have proof of purchase (charge amount, date) and your account email ready.
Cancellation = turning off auto-renewal in McAfee My Account (myaccount.mcafee.com > Subscriptions > Cancel > Cancel Auto-Renewal), or the alternate service.mcafee.com > Account > Auto-Renewal Settings path. Fully self-service online; phone/chat (1-866-622-3911) is only needed for a refund. McAfee's own help articles (000001781 'Change or cancel auto-renewal', 000001677 'Auto-Renewal FAQ', 000001679 refund policy) and Contact Us page consistently TIMED OUT to direct fetch (heavy Salesforce/JS portal), so step wording was assembled from McAfee's own search-result snippets plus corroborating reputable sources (LegalClarity, TrustedSite, GetHuman, SafetyDetectives). Article 000001781 title and the Subscriptions/Cancel Auto-Renewal flow are confirmed via search snippets. Phone 1-866-622-3911 corroborated by GetHuman and the official service.mcafee.com direction; 24/7 hours could not be confirmed on McAfee's own loadable pages, so it is flagged unconfirmed. Apple/Google app-store cancellation routing confirmed (LegalClarity). CORRECTIONS from draft: (1) removed the free-trial gotcha claiming a credit card is required and the trial auto-converts; multiple sources state the standard McAfee Total Protection free trial requires NO credit card and does not auto-convert (you get an email to subscribe), so the claim was unsupported and has been dropped. (2) Added the monthly-plans-not-eligible-for-refund caveat (annual only). (3) Narrowed the app-store note to Apple/Google (authoritatively confirmed) plus retailer/PC-maker/ISP bundles; dropped the unconfirmed 'Amazon Memberships & Subscriptions' routing and the 'remove your saved payment method' step that no source supports. (4) Updated Apple/Google cancel steps to current 2026 Apple Support and Google Play Help wording.
