How to cancel Microsoft 365
Last verified 2026-06-16 · official source
Steps to cancel Microsoft 365
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services (or directly to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365).
- Sign in with the SAME Microsoft personal account you used to buy Microsoft 365. If you bought it through a work or school account, you cannot self-cancel; contact your organization's IT admin instead.
- Find your Microsoft 365 subscription and select 'Manage'.
- On the subscription page select 'Cancel subscription' (on some plans this appears as 'Upgrade or Cancel').
- If you instead see a link that says 'Turn on recurring billing', STOP: your subscription is already set to expire on the date shown and you will NOT be charged again. No further action is needed.
- Review the information on the page, then at the bottom select 'I don't want my subscription' (the keep option is 'I want to keep my benefits').
- Follow the remaining prompts and confirm to finalize. The flow will indicate any refund eligibility automatically.
- If you signed up for a free trial, cancel within 30 days of signing up to avoid being charged; you keep trial features until it ends, after which Office eventually drops to View Only mode (you can open and print but not edit or create).
Things to watch out for
- You must be signed in with the exact Microsoft account that purchased the subscription; a work or school account cannot self-cancel (go through your IT admin).
- Cancellations must be made more than 2 days before the next billing date, or the renewal can still go through.
- Turning off recurring billing is NOT the same as a refund: you keep access until the current paid period ends, but you are not charged again.
- Seeing 'Turn on recurring billing' means auto-renew is already off and the subscription will simply expire; do not assume you still need to cancel.
- If a payment is overdue or your card has expired, you must resolve the outstanding balance before the system will let you cancel.
- Cancelling a Microsoft 365 Family or Premium plan also reduces the storage allowance for everyone you shared it with, ending their access to the paid benefits.
- After cancelling Basic/Personal/Family/Premium, cloud storage reverts to 5GB (OneDrive plus Outlook.com attachments) and 15GB of Outlook.com storage, so move files out beforehand if you are over the limit.
- Free trials charge automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel during the 30-day trial window.
- If billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, you must cancel there, not on Microsoft's site; the same applies to third-party retailers like Amazon (contact the retailer).
Refunds
Bought directly from Microsoft: refund eligible within 30 days of initial purchase OR before your first recurring billing date, whichever is sooner. You can also refund your most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after that payment, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. The cancel flow shows refund eligibility automatically (cancel first to request it). Prorated refunds for any subscription length apply only in certain countries (Canada, Denmark, France, Israel, Korea, Turkiye, plus French territories, Faroe Islands, Greenland); some others (Finland, Germany after Mar 1 2022, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal) get prorated refunds only on renewals of subscriptions longer than one month. For Copilot Pro / Microsoft 365 Premium, all other countries get a prorated refund only if cancelled within 14 days of purchase. App Store / Google Play purchases follow Apple's or Google's refund rules, not Microsoft's.
Cancellation is fully self-service online via your Microsoft account; no phone call or store visit is required. There is no separate Microsoft 365 mobile-app cancel flow for purchases made directly from Microsoft (use the website). If blocked from cancelling online, Microsoft directs you to its guided support tool / Contact Microsoft Support; it does not publish a dedicated cancellation phone number on these pages, so the phone fields are intentionally left empty. If you bought your subscription in Germany, Microsoft offers a special flow to cancel without signing into your account.
