How to cancel HBO Max

Steps to cancel HBO Max
- FIRST, identify who bills you. Sign in to HBO Max, open your profile, and choose Subscription (on the web go to https://www.hbomax.com/subscription and sign in). The billing provider is shown at the top of the subscription screen. If it says you are billed through Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, Samsung, or a TV/internet provider, you CANNOT cancel on HBO Max's site and must cancel with that provider (see the gotchas below).
- IF BILLED DIRECTLY BY HBO MAX (WarnerMedia/WBD): Go to https://www.hbomax.com/subscription and sign in. (The link redirects to the HBO Max sign-in page, then to your subscription settings.)
- Choose 'Cancel Your Subscription'.
- If a discount or retention offer appears (commonly reported but not part of the official documented flow), decline it to keep cancelling. Choose the option that continues the cancellation rather than accepting the offer.
- Confirm your cancellation when prompted.
- Note your access expiration date. You keep access until the end of the current billing period. Subscriptions billed directly through HBO Max are non-refundable, so there is no partial-month refund.
- Watch for a confirmation email. Note: deleting the HBO Max app does NOT cancel the subscription.
Things to watch out for
- BRAND NAME: The service that was called 'Max' rebranded back to 'HBO Max' (rebrand went live July 9, 2025). It is the same app, subscription, and login; only the name changed.
- APP STORE / PROVIDER BILLING TRAP: If you subscribed via the Apple App Store, Google Play, Roku, Amazon Appstore, Samsung, Prime Video Channels, or a TV/internet provider, canceling on HBO Max's website will NOT stop the charge. You must cancel where you signed up. Check the 'billed through' line at the top of your HBO Max subscription screen to confirm who charges you.
- iPhone/iPad (Apple billing): Settings app > your name > Subscriptions > HBO Max > Cancel Subscription.
- Android (Google Play billing): Play Store app > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > HBO Max > Cancel subscription.
- Roku: my.roku.com/subscriptions > find HBO Max > Manage subscription > turn off auto-renew.
- Amazon Appstore: amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions > Your Subscriptions > HBO Max > turn off auto-renewal.
- Samsung: samsungcheckout.com > Purchase History > Subscriptions > HBO Max > Unsubscribe.
- Cable/internet/bundle (AT&T, Cox, DIRECTV, Hulu, Optimum, Sling TV, Spectrum, Verizon, Xfinity, YouTube TV, etc.): cancel through that provider's account portal, not HBO Max.
- FREE TRIAL: Cancel before the trial end date to avoid being charged; it auto-renews after the trial. You keep access until the trial expires if you cancel early.
- Deleting the app does NOT cancel your subscription.
- BILLING CYCLE: Access continues until the end of the paid period; subscriptions billed directly through HBO Max have no partial-month refunds. If you cancel an annual (12-month) plan billed by HBO Max, you continue to be charged the monthly installment until the 12-month term ends.
Refunds
Subscriptions billed directly through HBO Max are non-refundable per the official refund policy: 'There is a no refund policy for subscriptions billed through HBO Max.' You retain access until the end of the period you already paid for. The Extra Member Add-On gets a prorated refund for any remaining days when cancelled. If you were billed through Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, or Samsung, any refund is governed by that platform's own refund policy, so request it there.
The service formerly called 'Max' is now 'HBO Max' again (rebrand went live July 9, 2025); it is the same subscription and login. No inbound cancellation phone line is published on HBO Max's official help pages (the official Contact Us page offers only a feedback link, not a hotline), so phone is left blank to avoid surfacing an unverified number. The official direct-billing flow uses the labels 'Cancel Your Subscription' then 'Confirm your cancellation'; references to a 'Manage Subscription' button, a save offer, and a cancellation-reason prompt come from third-party guides and are not in the official documentation. A clean shortcut to the official cancel article is help.hbomax.com/cancel.
