How to cancel BetterHelp

Go to the BetterHelp cancellation page →
If you subscribed through an app store: BetterHelp can be billed three ways and you must cancel where you signed up. Web signups: cancel in-account at betterhelp.com (Menu > My Account > Payment Settings > Change Plan / Quit Counseling). Apple App Store signups (iOS app): cancel in iPhone/iPad Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions > BetterHelp; BetterHelp cannot cancel an Apple-billed subscription for you. Google Play signups (Android app): cancel in Play Store > profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > BetterHelp. If you cancel only inside the BetterHelp website but were billed through Apple or Google, charges will continue (and app-store signups may not even show a cancel option in your BetterHelp account). Check your card or receipt: a charge labeled Apple.com/Bill or Google means it is app-store-billed and must be canceled in that store.

Steps to cancel BetterHelp

  1. Log in to your BetterHelp account at betterhelp.com (or in the BetterHelp app).
  2. Open the Menu, then go to My Account (also labeled Account Settings).
  3. Select Payment Settings.
  4. Click Change Plan / Quit Counseling, then choose the final option, Quit Counseling / Quit Therapy.
  5. Answer the short questions about your reason for leaving (this is where any retention/save prompt appears), then confirm.
  6. Watch for the confirmation email from BetterHelp; if you do not receive one, email contact@betterhelp.com to confirm the cancellation.
  7. Optional, to also delete your data: go back to Menu > My Account > Personal Information and click Request Erasure.
  8. IMPORTANT: If you signed up through the iPhone/iPad app, cancel in Apple instead (Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions). If you signed up through the Android app, cancel in Google Play (Play Store > profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions). Canceling inside the BetterHelp site will NOT stop app-store billing, and app-store signups may not even show a cancel option inside your BetterHelp account.
Watch for the save offer. During the Quit Counseling flow BetterHelp asks why you are leaving and may offer to switch therapists, pause, or adjust your plan or price rather than fully cancel. To actually end billing, decline these and complete the final Quit Counseling confirmation, then verify you get the cancellation confirmation email.

Things to watch out for

Refunds

Standard policy: cancellations are not prorated and unused days in the current cycle are not refunded; you keep access through the end of the current paid period. Refunds are granted only case-by-case by contacting support (contact@betterhelp.com). If billed via Apple or Google, refund requests go through that store (for example reportaproblem.apple.com), not BetterHelp. Note: the FTC $7.8M settlement refunds (about $10 each, first mailed June 2024 to customers from Aug 1, 2017 to Dec 31, 2020) are a one-time privacy-case payout, separate from normal cancellation refunds.

Cancellation is fully online (web or app); no phone call or office visit is required. BetterHelp has no confirmed official phone line, so its own recommended contact is the in-account flow plus email contact@betterhelp.com. Confidence is medium because betterhelp.com (and several cited guides) block automated page fetches, so the exact in-account menu labels (Menu > My Account > Payment Settings > Change Plan / Quit Counseling) are corroborated across multiple consistent guides and the search index of BetterHelp's own advice page rather than read verbatim from the live page; FTC, Apple, and Google Play facts are from authoritative sources read directly or via their official search summaries. The official, most-corroborated support address is contact@betterhelp.com (some third-party guides list contact@betterhelp.co; that variant is unverified).
